Famous Women in Recovery: Kelly Osbourne

Famous Women in Recovery: Kelly Osbourne

Kelly Osbourne is quite the celebrity – having made a name for herself after stepping out of the shadow of her famous musician father, Ozzy Osbourne. She is probably best known today for her fashion sense, which she shares with other famous women like Joan Rivers on E!’s Fashion Police.

The Osbournes and Kelly’s Addiction

The award-winning reality show The Osbournes, which documented the daily California suburban life of the Osbourne family is what first propelled Kelly’s career as a celebrity and also was what documented the beginnings of her drug addiction.

There were times on the show where Kelly is visibly (as well as often) sick –running to the bathroom when she would become suddenly physically sick. Her denial – and that of her family (Ozzy is also in recovery from drug addiction), is apparent during these earlier episodes when Kelly seems genuinely perturbed about her sudden bouts of vomiting. It later comes to light that Kelly is, in fact, eating lots of Vicodin – a powerful narcotic painkiller.

Although varying in the amount she was taking at the height of her addiction, by all accounts, painkillers were her drug of choice.

Recovery

Kelly O, as she is called, is quoted as saying “What bugs me the most is that people think I was a party girl and I went around having a great time. I did drugs because I hated myself and I was miserable, and I didn’t want to think about it anymore.”

She had attempted rehab on at least 3 different occasions before finding success, stringing together several years of clean time.

Relapse

Kelly Osbourne had accumulated some significant clean time – four years in all – before she relapsed on alcohol. Again, the accounts seem to dispute the extent of her relapse but, most chalk it up to the pressure and emotional pain she was experiencing at learning that her brother, Jack had been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, a progressive disease for which there is no cure.

Osbourne’s relapse became apparent when, on a flight with her assistant, she was visibly intoxicated, as reported by her fellow passengers.

Kelly Osbourne – Better Than Ever

With about 10 months of clean time now, Kelly O says she’s better than ever. She has lost a significant amount of weight and is now engaged to boyfriend Matthew Mosshart. She continues to carve out her own success as a television presenter, fashion designer, singer and actress. A return to rehab helped support Osbourne’s sobriety and avoid a full-blown relapse into prescription drug abuse.

Having supportive friends and family, including her fiancé Matthew Mosshart, also helped.

“People think I lost weight and then got happy, but that’s not how it works. You have to get happy first,” Osbourne told In Touch magazine.

Today, Kelly O’s friends say that she is “the happiest she’s ever been. Her career is going well, and she’s in a healthy relationship with a wonderful guy.”
