Drug Addiction Treatment FAQ

What is Drug Addiction Treatment?

There are a variety of drug addiction treatments to choose from: outpatient drug addiction treatment programs that allow you to return home every night and inpatient drug addiction treatment programs that provide more structure and support with 24-hour care. There are detox-only facilities that focus only on the physical aspects of addiction and get you through the initial withdrawals, sober living facilities that support you as you transition from drug rehab back home and places like The Canyon which can give you all of the above in an integrated treatment. From traditional to alternative and all places in between, the styles of drug addiction treatment vary as well. It is essential that you take a look at what’s out there and choose the facility that will best work for you.

Is Drug Addiction Treatment Necessary?

Yes. Drug addiction is a medical disease and though some may find a minimal measure of success when they attempt to quit on their own, few will maintain an abstinent or sober lifestyle for long without addressing the issues that made them use in the first place and learning new tools to cope with those issues that don’t include drug and alcohol use.

Also, in some instances, attempting to detox off of high amounts of any drug or even moderate amounts of certain drugs like opiate painkillers can be dangerous and even deadly if done without the benefit of medical supervision.

Does Drug Addiction Treatment Work?

There is no cure for drug addiction and it is a chronic disease, which means is it characterized by recurring relapses, but drug addiction treatment does work. Studies have shown that drug use is reduced by 40 percent to 60 percent among those who attend drug rehab. Other studies show that violence and crime associated with drug use is reduced by more than 40 percent after drug rehab. Also, illnesses related to intravenous drug use drop significantly in areas where drug rehab is prevalent and employment rates increase.

How Long Does Drug Addiction Treatment Last?

It depends upon what type of treatment you choose and the facility offering that treatment. Inpatient programs typically last for about 30 days but some facilities offer long-term treatment that can last three months, six months or a year. Outpatient programs are typically shorter, lasting 30 days or fewer, but certain programs like 12-step groups meet weekly and many attend for years.

How Much Does Drug Addiction Treatment Cost?

Again, this depends upon the type of drug rehab you choose and the facility providing it. One thing is clear, though: drug addiction is well worth the money spent. Consider how much money is lost on drugs and alcohol, the amount of income lost to days missed at work due to drug use or being hung over? How many priceless relationships with friends, family and work colleagues have been damaged? How many opportunities have passed you by because you’ve been too submerged in drug addiction to notice? What about the medical bills, the financial losses, the legal problems that come out of drug addiction? Any investment in drug addiction treatment is one that will pay for itself over and over again throughout your life.
