Women and Drug Addiction

As a rule, drug treatment facilities implement treatment modalities and philosophies that focus on the needs of men addicted to opioid narcotics. This is not to say that women are actively ignored but more often that concerns specific to women and characteristics of female drug use often fall through cracks and go untreated. At Orchid Recovery Center, 100 percent of our program is dedicated to women and their gender specific drug use and addiction.

Women In Crisis

More research appears every year that underlines the growing need for women-centered drug addiction treatment. It has been shown, for example, that 70 percent of women with HIV/AIDS contracted the disease through a drug-related incident.

However, a great deal of understanding is lacking in most drug treatment centers on the specifics of drug use and the needs of women of different sexual orientations and ethnic backgrounds and older women. This lack of research means that most treatment centers push all their patients through the same treatment schedule. Orchid Recovery Center proudly provides services to women from all backgrounds and all ages at rates that are affordable.

Women are unique in that the catalysts for their drug use are often quite different from those of men. These may include:

  • Sexual victimization in childhood or adolescence
  • Domestic abuse from a partner or spouse
  • Anxiety disorders and depression

Many of these issues are misdiagnosed resulting in inappropriate prescriptions or over-medication, which in turn leads to drug addiction. In other cases, the trauma of abuse and violence leads to drug abuse, which can create phobic, depressive, and antisocial personality disorders. All of these can affect the outcome of drug addiction recovery.

Drug Treatment Factors for Women

Drug use and abuse results in a number of medical and health consequences that are different or more severe for women than men. These can include disruption of the menstrual cycle and reproductive function, a higher risk of contracting HIV/AIDS and decrease in immune function. Social and behavioral consequences include homelessness and high-risk sexual behaviors that put themselves and their families at risk. Legal consequences and rising financial costs can bankrupt women and their dependents.

Orchid Recovery Center staff are educated in gender specific drug addiction treatment factors and incorporate this training into their day-to-day undertakings with patients. This sensitivity to female-specific recovery needs makes Orchid Recovery Center an effective alcohol rehab for women and one of the best Florida drug detox programs available.
