Port St. Lucie Rehab Programs

port st. lucie rehab centersThe link between shame and addiction can be strong, and it’s a link that can be hard to break. For example, a study in the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs found that women in recovery had higher levels of shame, when compared to women who had no addiction issue. People who have active addictions for which they’re not yet receiving care might have even higher levels of shame, as their addictions might require them to say and do things they might have never thought possible when they were sober.

For women living in Port St. Lucie, help is available. Through a formal addiction treatment program, women can get therapy that can help them to leave drugs behind, and they can use the skills they’ve learned to improve their mental health.

Why Help Is Needed

It’s tempting to think that people with addiction issues can heal on their own without the help of others. The culture rewards women who are strong and who do things themselves, and as a result, women might feel uncomfortable with the mere idea of asking for help for an issue as embarrassing as addiction. It’s unlikely, however, that women can deal with this kind of problem on their own.

Addictions can cause changes in brain chemistry, leading to:

  • A lack of impulse control
  • An inability to focus on the future, rather than the now
  • Cravings that are hard to control
  • Depression, anxiety and other mental health concerns that don’t seem to abate

An amended brain like this isn’t functioning at full capacity, and as a result, women can’t simply make the decision to stop using and then make that decision stick. They’ll need help from experts in order to make the sorts of changes that can lead to long-term health and avoidance of substance abuse. Therapy can help women to achieve sobriety, so their minds can begin to heal, and therapy can help women pick up the skills they can use in order to help them avoid a relapse in the future. It’s intensive help, and it works.

Finding the Right Program

There are many different kinds of programs that could be used in the fight against an addiction, and finding the right program often means interviewing several different admissions experts and asking tough questions about the care that will be provided. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), one important question involves the duration of treatment. The NIDA suggests that programs should last for three months, at a minimum, in order to help people improve. Programs might meet this need by providing long-term housing for clients, or they might use intensive programs that slowly transition into less intensive forms of care. Asking about the details, and taking notes during the interview, can help families to make an informed choice and find the right kind of care to help the person that they love.
