As they say, a program of recovery depends on getting in touch with your spirituality. After all, addiction is three-fold: it’s a physical allergy, mental obsession, and spiritual malady. Getting clean and sober and continuing to abstain from drinking or using takes care of the first two things but, it’s the third aspect – spirituality – that requires constant upkeep.

Lately, everything seems like a personal attack. You’re quick to respond and you’re totally defensive. Or maybe you’ve been less than willing to help others or only do so when you’re getting something in return. You think your way is the right way and you get irritable, upset or angry when things don’t go your way. If you identify with any of this, it’s time to take a look at your spiritual program.

Here are 5 signs you need to up your spiritual game.

#1. You’re feeling restless, irritable, and discontent

The literature refers to this, saying that we were once “restless, irritable, and discontent.” If you notice that you’re once again starting to feel like this on any given day, it’s definitely a sign you need to focus on the spiritual aspects of your program.

#2. You’ve slacked off when it comes to praying and meditating

There certainly isn’t a “right way” when it comes to how to be spiritual. In the program, it is commonly suggested to get in the habit of praying and meditating. I’ve heard it put like this before: prayer is talking to your Higher Power and meditation is listening to your Higher Power. However you bolster your own spirituality, if you’ve stopped doing whatever it is, this is an obvious sign that you need to up your spiritual game.

#3. You don’t seem to have any patience or compassion when it comes to others

Read: everyone has been pissing you off lately. Whether it’s behind the wheel or in line at the grocery store, you are constantly at the end of your rope, feeling like you could snap at any moment and tear someone’s head off just because they looked at you funny. This sort of thing can only spell trouble. The good news is that you can do something about it. By getting back on the right foot with your spiritual program, you will notice that your temper will subside.

#4. You’re not willing to “clean your side of the street”

You might be wrong about something or maybe you have wronged someone in some way but you refuse to admit it. You’re committed to being right or saving face instead of doing the right thing. Try reconnecting with your Higher Power and you’ll find that your hard edges will soon soften.

#5. You’re boastful and braggadocious

Basically, your ego has gotten the better of you and is simply out of control. You might a.) walk around thinking and acting like you’re better than everyone else or b.) feel the opposite: that you’re worthless and, in some way “less than” others. Remember, ego can show up either way. So, if you’re too busy focusing on yourself – whether it’s on the positive or negative – this is a sign that you need to up your spiritual game.
