Nutritional Counseling

All of us have heard the saying "you are what you eat." At The Orchid, we believe that balanced, healthy nutrition is essential to help our clients become balanced, healthy women. At Orchid we provide not only a diet that supports recovery, but an increased awareness of the importance of food to continued recovery.

Our clinical Treatment Team has used the latest scientific research to develop a program specifically targeted at providing a woman's recovering body with the nutrients it needs to recover from the abuses of drug addiction. Proper intake of nutritious elements, including water, proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals is the most basic requirement for physical health and mental well-being. For those who have lived an addictive lifestyle, the proper and balanced intake of these nutrients is especially important. Alcohol and drug abuse cause significant damage to the digestive tract and the liver, both of which impact how effectively the body can absorb and utilize the nutrients it receives. Consequently, healthy, whole, living, nutrient-dense foods and dietary supplements are particularly important to recovering women to both compensate for this damage and to reverse it.

Furthermore, research indicates that proper nutrition plays a powerful role in preventing sobriety-jeopardizing cravings. A growing body of scientific evidence points to biochemical factors in alcoholism and drug addiction. For example, a strong link between hypoglycemia and alcoholic drinking suggests that precipitous drops in blood sugar can trigger many people's alcohol abuse. Recovery programs like Orchid's which combine counseling with nutritional support designed to stabilize blood sugar levels and to provide high levels of nutrient supplementation result in significantly greater levels of relapse prevention than those which neglect the nutritional aspect of recovery.

At The Orchid we not only provide a nutritionally sound diet while you are with us, but provide extensive, focused counseling in how to select and prepare healing, restorative foods yourself. After this nutritional counseling, which includes how diet integrates into the 12 steps, how the mind, body and spirit are affected by food, and how nutrition can heal common ailments, our clients leave with knowledge of how to integrate conscious eating into the rest of your recovering lives.
