Why are Drug Treatment Interventions so Important?

If you or someone that you love is struggling with alcoholism or drug addiction, you obviously want for him or her to stop using. Ultimately, however, your wants and desires are immaterial to his or her recovery. The fact is that he or she is unlikely to get better until he or she wants to stop using. Intervention is the process of creating that desire in the addict, and drug treatment is the method of successfully starting the recovery process.

Interventions to get someone into drug treatment are difficult and complex proceedings. On one side of the equation you have the desire of the family to see their friend or family member stop using drugs. On the other side of the equation, you have the addicted individual, who wants to keep using drugs. This person, if he or she is under the influence of an addiction mindset cannot be approached and reasoned with like a normal person. In a very real sense, in an addictive individual, the desire to deep using drugs becomes the most powerful aspect of their personality, and uses the other parts of that person’s personality to defend itself.

In an intervention to get someone into drug treatment, the interventionist and family members should be aware that the addicted individual will say or do just about anything to avoid giving up drugs. He or she will use selective vision and logic to avoid acknowledging factors that do not support continued use. He or she will use emotional manipulation, logic, argumentation, causing dissension between family members, distraction, drama, tears, satire and any other weapons at his or her disposal. For that reason, those performing the intervention should be prepared and practiced for their roles in the intervention.

How Does a Drug Intervention Work?

It is essential that family and friends work with an interventionist to help facilitate the process. Knowing how to find a professional interventionist is a simple as asking the family doctor, psychiatrist or a recommend drug rehab facility.

During the intervention, the goal should be to demonstrate to the addict that his or her behavior causes harm to the addict and family member. Each friend or family member takes turns telling the addict how he or she has been hurt by the using behavior and asks that the addict take steps to stop using by immediately beginning drug treatment. During this stage of the intervention, the interventionist works to keep the participants focused on the topic at hand and to prevent the addict from disrupting the process.

What Happens after a Drug Treatment Intervention?

At the end of the intervention and drug treatment, the addict has been presented with evidence of his or her harmful behavior and has been offered a chance to change behavior by checking into drug treatment. Ideally, the user will be convinced by the intervention and agree to the need for change. Once the addict agrees, he or she should be immediately checked into the drug treatment center. Otherwise there is the possibility that he or she will conveniently “forget” about his or her new commitment and begin using drugs immediately.
