Drug Rehab and Pregnancy

The rates of alcohol use, abuse and addiction among women who are pregnant is of critical concern due to the irreparable harm that can be done to the unborn child if the mother drinks while pregnant. A 2002 report estimated that around 4 percent of women who sought treatment for alcohol related problems admitted to drinking while they were pregnant. Additionally, women who used alcohol when pregnant were also much more likely to use other illegal drugs, such as marijuana, cocaine and heroin.

If you or someone you love is suffering from alcohol addiction and is pregnant, call Orchid Recovery Center. We can help you break your addiction so that both you and your unborn child will be healthier.

The Need for Drug Rehab Among Pregnant Women

In national surveys conducted in 2002 and 2003, 10 percent of the women who replied said that they abused alcohol, while another 5 percent reported that they had used alcohol on a binge or heavy basis in the month prior to the survey. A second survey estimated that between 3 percent and 10 percent of pregnant women used alcohol at some point during their pregnancy, and that the rates were higher among women who were older, non Hispanic, more educated and more wealthy. Clearly, there is a real problem with alcohol abuse and misuse in women who are pregnant. Other studies have shown that there is a link between alcohol abuse and other drug abuse and addiction, so if a woman is pregnant and drinking, then there is a greater risk that she will develop some type of drug addiction as well.

Pregnant Women and Drug Rehab: Barriers to Getting Treatment

Studies have shown that women who are pregnant and abusing drugs or alcohol will tend to avoid seeking treatment because they fear repercussions that may take place against them or their children. They feel that if they seek drug treatment, their children may be taken away or that they may be prosecuted for child abuse. This fear is not without substance, as there have been high-profile cases in the media where drug or alcohol-addicted women have faced litigation and had their children taken away once it was discovered that they had drug or alcohol problems. Additionally, state laws in 14 different states make it a child abuse crime to take drugs or alcohol while pregnant, and nine states require that healthcare officials report any suspected substance abuse by pregnant women.

When women seek treatment, they are much more likely than their male counterparts to be caring for their children or to have children living at home, and they are also more likely to care more about their children than a male in the same situation would. This feeling of responsibility and protection for their child or children is one of the biggest barriers facing women who are in need of substance abuse treatment. Many drug or alcohol treatment centers do not offer any child care services for women who enroll in their programs, which limits how often a woman can attend treatments.
