Drug Detox FAQ
What is Drug Detox?
Drug detox is the first part of drug rehab, the initial phase of treatment that focuses solely on your physical addiction to your drug of choice, be it heroin, prescription painkillers like Vicodin, OxyContin, Lortab, Percocet and others, crystal meth, cocaine, marijuana or alcohol. Depending on the kind of drug, you will likely undergo a medical maintenance to help you through the worst of the withdrawal symptoms that characterize drug detox.
Because this first part of drug addiction treatment can be so intense, it is important that you not attempt it on your own. Few can make it through these weeks without any medical assistance without relapsing or suffering complications due to health problems.
How Do I Know If I Need Drug Detox?
If you are physically addicted to any drug, you need drug detox in order to safely break that addiction. Do you experience withdrawal symptoms—headaches, bone and muscle ache, intense irritability, depression, insomnia, nausea, sweating, tremors—when you miss a dose or try to stop taking your drug of choice? These withdrawal symptoms signify that your body is detoxing off the drug and it is important that you only do this under the supervision of a medical professional or drug rehab facility.
What Drugs of Addiction Require a Drug Detox for Treatment?
Inherent to every addictive drug is a period of drug detox when you stop taking it. There are, however, a few circumstances in you will experience a particularly difficult drug detox, and these include addiction to opiates of any kind and addiction to any drug that is particularly long lasting or in which you are addicted to a very high dose. Opiate detox can be dangerous if you develop complications or have co-occurring medical disorders of which you are unaware. In the same way, if you are addicted to a very high dose of a non opiate drug or have been using daily for a very long period of time without interruption, your drug detox experience will be a bit more severe.
What Can I Expect at a Drug Detox?
Depending upon where you go for treatment, you may receive medication to mitigate or treat your withdrawal symptoms and keep your discomfort at a minimum. Even if you undergo drug detox at a drug rehab that also provides a comprehensive drug addiction treatment, you likely will refrain from beginning the therapeutic part of rehab until your body has had time to adjust to being without your drug of choice. This may take anywhere from a few days to a week or more depending upon the treatments, medications, your level of addiction and your drug of choice.
