Empowering Women through Trauma Resolution at The Orchid

Empowering Women through Trauma Resolution at The Orchid

The Orchid Ideology

Trauma can be a result of numerous things. In some cases, trauma is a reaction to a catastrophic critical life-changing event. Many survivors of intense experiences such as a natural disaster or other life-threatening situations struggle with some degree of trauma. Other people who experience trauma are survivors of physical, emotional, verbal or sexual abuse. Such devastating circumstances can severely damage a woman’s ability to cope with adversity, her emotional well-being, and her self-esteem.

Traumatic stress is a normal reaction to a not-so-normal or traumatic event. Many define a traumatic experience as any unusual or unexpected experience or event that occurs, such as:

  • Recurring physical and/or emotional abuse
  • Loss of a loved one
  • Situations where a person has feared for their life or the life of another
  • Simply living in prolonged stressful environment
  • Domestic violence

A person who has experienced trauma can experience such reactions as:

  • Intrusive recollections of the event
  • Recurring nightmares
  • Dissociative reactions
  • Physical reactivity to related situation

They can also experience intense anxiety and depression, fluctuating moods and irritability, and general inability to cope with everyday life. Trauma often leads to unhealthy choices, including self-medicating through chronic drug use. It can also become a contributing factor of relapse into drug use or other destructive behaviors.

As a drug and alcohol treatment facility founded to meet the needs of women that can often time be overlooked by the recovery community, the Orchid Recovery Center recognizes the critical impact of untreated trauma and the significant physical and emotional strain it can create.

As part of the Orchid Recovery Center commitment to providing holistic healing, our trauma resolution tract offers a number of evidence-based treatment approaches that research has shown to be quite effective in treating traumatic incidences, such as:

  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Debriefing)

EMDR is considered one of the most researched and effective techniques in resolving the effects of a traumatic experience. Clinicians use a non-invasive method of eye movements, hand taps, or sound to stimulate the natural information processing of the brain to relieve intrusive thoughts and overwhelming emotional states.

Used to assist in resolving trauma-related disorders resulting from exposure to a traumatic or a distressing event. EMDR may also be used to address stress, anxiety or cravings.

  • CISD (Critical Incidence Stress Debriefing)

A specific, 7-phase, small group, supportive crisis intervention process. It is just one of the many crisis intervention techniques which are included under the umbrella of a Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) program.

  • RTR (Rapid Trauma Resolution)

Rapid Trauma Resolution is short term, un-intrusive process that quickly and painlessly eliminates the negative effects of traumatic experiences.

  • Canine Assisted Therapy

Canine Assisted Therapy enhances many therapy modalities, as the presence of a well-trained canine increases the sense of well-being and builds rapport more quickly so a client can feel more comfortable and able to open up because canines provide unconditional love and acceptance.  Research shows that the interaction with a canine decreases Cortisol and increases Oxytocin, or the attachment hormone, particularly in women.
