Why Can’t I Have My Cell Phone in Rehab?

Why Can't I Have My Cell Phone in Rehab?

Why can’t I have my cell phone in rehab? The purpose of going to rehab is to get away from the outside world and distractions and focus on yourself, how can you do that with access to your cell phone? For most addicts and alcoholics, we used our cell phones to get a lot of things in our addiction. Like calling the drug dealer and making mission calls to find someone or some way to get high.

Why Can’t I Have My Cell Phone in Rehab?: Big Distraction

When we enter treatment, we are there because our lives have become unmanageable and we need to find a new way to live because our way wasn’t working anymore. Having your cell phone is just a big distraction to this process. Drug addicts and alcoholics will go to any lengths to get drunk or high, so having your cell phone readily available to you would make it that much easier to disrupt your recovery.

Why Can’t I Have My Cell Phone in Rehab?: You Need to Get Away From People, Places and Things

Not having a cell phone helps you stay away from people, places and things and heal emotionally, physically and spiritually. When I went to rehab, if I would have had my cell phone I probably wouldn’t have stayed sober. There were many nights where I just wanted to leave but not having anyone to call or transportation stopped me. If I had a cell phone I would have been out of there quick the second I had an urge to drink or get high.

Why Can’t I Have My Cell Phone in Rehab?: It Doesn’t Help With Urges to Relapse

I remember having a step by step plan when I was in treatment to break out in the middle of the night, go down the street to the cell phone store I spotted and purchase a cell phone. Then I was going to use that cell phone to call my drug dealer and meet up with my ex-boyfriend, but of course just so I could get high ONE MORE TIME. I had all of these thoughts and this plan in treatment when I didn’t have my cell phone, can you imagine how much worse it would have been if I had it?

Why Can’t I Have My Cell Phone in Rehab?: You’re Sick and Need to Focus on Getting Better

This all just proves to me how sick I was and how the last thing I needed was a cell phone. What I needed was time to focus on me and all these new emotions and feelings that were coming up. I needed to learn how to live life and what I needed to do to stay sober. All of this being said, when you are in treatment you are still able to call your family and loved ones, but first your therapist has to meet with you and approve the numbers that you want to call and you are given only certain times to call them.

Why Can’t I Have My Cell Phone in Rehab?: Time to Focus on You!

I know that it all seems a little bit much when it comes to talking on the phone; but this is time for you to work on you and not be preoccupied by anything else. They also have your whole day planned out in treatment for you so you won’t be getting bored any time soon. I promise, you will survive for just 30 days without a cell phone and unlimited connections to the outside world. This is your time, enjoy it and be grateful you are being given this opportunity. We all deserve better than the miserable life of active addiction! If you or a loved one is struggling with substance abuse or addiction, please call toll free 1-888-672-4435.
