Adele spectacular voice has been heard around the world. Her new album 25 topped charts in many countries. However, it was not long ago that her voice and life were in jeopardy from her pack-a-day smoking habit.

Although many speculate the song Hello is about a relationship, the lyrics “I’m sorry for everything that I’ve done,” could be Adele apologizing to her own vocal chords. Recently, Adele admitted that her cigarette smoking habits were so out of control that they were endangering her singing ability.

The 27-year old revealed she was smoking 25 cigarettes a day before she had to stop performing in 2011 to undergo surgery on her vocal chords. After an operation, doctors told Adele that if she didn’t quit she could do permanent damage to her voice.

She said in an interview to The Mirror:

“If I’d carried on smoking I’d probably have died from a smoking-related illness and I think that’s really bad.  If I was dying from lung cancer I would have potentially given it to myself and that wouldn’t be something I’d be proud of.”

Adele has always been very open about her love for smoking cigarettes.  She soon realized she would have to give up the habit especially since cancer runs in her family. Her father, Mark Evans, 53, was previously diagnosed with bowel cancer.

The Grammy winner says her 3-year-old son Angelo was another major influence for putting down the cigs.

“I absolutely loved [smoking], but it’s not that fucking cool when I’m dying from a smoking-related illness and my kid is, like, devastated,” she said.

Adele loved smoking cigarettes and said in many interviews that smoking was “her thing,” however she admits she noticed a difference in her voice just weeks after putting down the packs away for good. Years later, it seems to have paid off in a big way.

Dropping the Habit

You do not have to be a famous pop singer to know that smoking is bad for you.
