5 Things to Do Before You Pick a Sober House

5 Things to Do Before You Pick a Sober House

After you leave rehab, going into a Sober House is usually the next step. When it comes to picking a sober house to live in, there are certain things you should do prior to making your choice. I’ve thought of 5 things you should consider before you pick the sober house you are going to live in.

5 Things to Do Before You Pick a Sober House: Talk with a Therapist or a Support

When picking a sober house to live in, it is always a great idea to talk with your therapist of your supports. Whether you are going from treatment into sober living or if you are just simply entering a sober living house, it is always in your best interest to talk with people who have your best interest in mind. In treatment, your therapist can definitely help guide you in the right direction towards an upstanding sober living house.

5 Things to Do Before You Pick a Sober House: Make Sure it is a 12-Step Based House

All sober living houses are different; it is good to find a sober house that is 12-step oriented. A 12-step based halfway house encourages (and sometimes even requires) you to go to meetings and work a program. It is important to go to meetings in order to stay sober, at least for me it was. Making those sober connections and getting a sponsor really had an impact on me and my sobriety.

5 Things to Do Before You Pick a Sober House: Consider the Location

It is true that you can get sober anywhere, but it is also a good idea to look into the location of the sober house you choose. It would be great if it was near the treatment center you went to (so you can attend IOP) and near the meetings you have been going to. We usually develop our sober supports and find good meetings early in sobriety so the location can be very important.

5 Things to Do Before You Pick a Sober House: Find a House That is Financially Good For You

There are sober living houses that have different financial requirements. You want to choose the house that you are financially able to go to. Some houses offer a scholarship program for those of us newly sober who don’t have jobs yet. It is vital that you find a house that is going to work with your situation.

5 Things to Do Before You Pick a Sober House: Find a House That Enforces Rules & Has a Good Reputation

You have to keep in mind that not all sober houses are good environments to live in. Some houses are just in it to get your money and don’t care what you are actually doing. You want to find a house that supervises you and holds you accountable. If you ask around you can find out which houses have a good reputation and which houses aren’t so good. What’s the point of going to a sober house if you aren’t trying to do the right thing, right? Where do calls go?

Calls to numbers on a specific treatment center listing will be routed to that treatment center. Calls to any general helpline will be answered or returned by one of the treatment providers listed, each of which is a paid advertiser: ARK Behavioral Health, Recovery Helpline, Alli Addiction Services.

By calling the helpline you agree to the terms of use. We do not receive any commission or fee that is dependent upon which treatment provider a caller chooses. There is no obligation to enter treatment.
