Staying involved and connecting with other women is something that really helped me when I first got sober. It’s important to develop relationships and create a strong support system. Guys will grab you’re a**, but women will save it! Something else that really helped stay sober is to remember that I don’t know everything and to set aside any thoughts or judgments I had about the recovery scene and just be open to listening and willing to change.

Change can be scary and if you don’t have an open-mind and people around to support you, it can be near impossible to go through all of that change. Being sober is so new and different for an addict or alcoholic. We are so used to using drugs and alcohol to cope with all of our problems and now that our coping mechanisms are gone – we don’t know what to do! It can make a person go insane, so staying in the middle of the fellowship can definitely help.

Working with a sponsor and going through your steps is very important to get started on right away. For me, I needed to go through my steps immediately or I wouldn’t have stayed sober. Just sitting around in my halfway house would have made me even crazier than I already was. Going to meetings helped keep me out of my own head. This program is about helping others but in the beginning it is okay to be a little selfish. Just stick with the women with time and do what they do, and you’ll get what they got – sober and happy!
