Alcoholism Signs and Symptoms

Millions of people all across the United States suffer from alcohol-related problems without evening knowing it, and many of those people are women. What may start out as an innocent social activity has the possibility of turning into a full-fledged addiction. This doesn’t happen overnight, though. It takes time for an addiction to form, and it can happen without you even realizing it. Although you may not recognize addiction when it first manifests in your body, its effects can cause serious damage to you in both the short-term and the long-term.

If you or someone you love is suffering from alcoholism, please contact the Orchid Recovery Center. We specialize in treating women who are suffering from alcohol-related issues and can help you beat your addiction.

When Alcohol Abuse Turns into Alcoholism

Alcohol abusers are women who have too much to drink on a regular basis. This abuse of alcohol can cause harm to their bodies, and can present a danger to themselves and the people around them, but in general, alcohol abusers are able to set limits and control their drinking to some extent. When alcohol abuse deteriorates into alcoholism, however, the woman begins to become dependent upon alcohol and loses control over the amount of alcohol that they consume. They move from having control to losing control, and they find themselves unable to stop drinking, even though they may realize that they are harming themselves both physically and psychologically.

Signs and Symptoms of Alcoholism

It can be hard to tell the difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction given that the signs of both are very similar. This line that separates the two is crossed once a person begins to rely upon alcohol for some reason. This can happen if they abuse it for a long period of time, thereby building up a tolerance to it which makes them need to drink more to achieve the same effects. After building up this tolerance, addicts will often have withdrawal symptoms like cravings, headaches and muscle pains if they do not have a drink for an extended period of time. Alcoholics will also tend to drink much more than other people and may be unable to stop drinking alcohol once they have started.

Do You Exhibit the Signs of Alcoholism?

There are many signs of alcoholism. Knowing what these signs are is important to determining if you are addicted to alcohol. First, if you tend to continue drinking more than you intended to drink for longer than you meant to do so, then you could be addicted. You might also be addicted if you have tried to stop drinking, but found that you weren’t able to do so. Another sign is having to drink more and more each time to achieve the desired effect, and once the effects wear off, you feel nervous, restless, sweaty and sleepless. You could also be addicted if you drink alcohol even though you know it’s harming you or making you feel sad or depressed.
