Alcohol Abuse Effects: Different Blood Alcohol Levels

The blood alcohol level, or BAC, of a person is the measurement that tells how much alcohol is in their blood. This is a percentage of alcohol in their blood, so if a person has a .05 BAC, then .05 percent of their blood is actually alcohol. The BAC limits for driving vary from state to state, but are generally around .08-.10, depending on which state it is. However, the effects of alcohol can be felt well before the .08 mark.

At Orchid Recovery Center, we help women who are suffering from alcohol abuse turn their lives around and break their addictions to alcohol or other drug addictions. We do this by providing them with holistic treatments that address all aspects of addiction, along with an expert team of therapists and physicians.

Effects of Alcohol Abuse

There are many effects from alcohol abuse, depending on the level of alcohol that is in your body. A list of some of the effects that can occur depending on your BAC is listed below.

.02-.03 BAC: With this much alcohol in the body, there are not many effects, other than feelings of mild euphoria and lightheadedness. There is no loss of coordination or muscle control at this point, although any natural shyness will be gone.

.04-.06 BAC: The feelings of euphoria have spread at this level, and you will also feel warmth and self-satisfied. Inhibitions will begin to disappear at this point, along with reservations and cautions about people and situations that you may have previously had. Your emotions will be more intense for both good and bad feelings, and your actions may start to appear exaggerated.

.07-.00 BAC: At this point, your body will start to become impaired. Your balance, speech, hearing and reaction time will all be affected, and your judgment and self control will also be impaired. You will not be able to remember things as well, and you will feel as though you can function better than you are truly able to.

.10-.125 BAC: At this point, you are no longer legally able to operate a motor vehicle in any state, and your coordination, speech, judgment and perceptive abilities are all severely impaired.

.13-.15 BAC: The previous feelings of euphoria will start to be replaced with feelings of uneasiness and depression at this level of alcohol content, and you will also experience blurry vision and will begin to lose the ability to stand up on your own.

.16-.19 BAC: Feelings of euphoria will be completely gone, and depression and sadness will become the dominant feelings as your ability to control your body deteriorates.

.20 BAC: At this point, you will likely need help to stand or walk, and if your sense of pain will be dramatically reduced. At this point, you will likely experience nausea and vomiting, and you run the risk of choking on your own vomit due to your gag reflex being suppressed.

.25 BAC: All functions and senses have become severely impaired at this point, and you run a higher risk of choking on your vomit.

.30 BAC: Many people forget who they are, where they are, or may suddenly lose consciousness at this point.

.35 BAC: At this point, you have reached the equivalent level of sedation as surgical anesthesia, and you may slip into a coma.

.40 and up BAC: Coma and death at this point are common, and it may be difficult to revive someone who slips into a coma with this much alcohol in their body.
